Two-Way Prepositions and Pippi Longstocking

What is the best way to learn the difference between dative and accusative – and how can Pippi Longstocking help in learning German?

In one of the last units of the primary school course, Alexandra practiced two-way prepositions with the children. Prepositions such as “in”, “unter” or “auf” can require different cases, dative and accusative in particular. The third case (dative) was practised with the sentences “Ich stehe auf einem grauen Polster” or “Wir stehen auf einer grünen Matratze”. This describes rest at one location and always answers the question “Where / Wo?”. Stepping from one cushion onto another was then accompanied by sentences such as “Ich steige auf einen blauen Polster”. The fourth case (accusative) was used here, which describes movement from one location to another and answers the question “Where to / Wohin?”

Then, the story of Pippi Longstocking was told – partly by the teacher and partly by the children themselves. After reading, the book was closed and opened again at randomly selected pages. On each of these pages, one child chose a scene and mimed it. The other children had to guess and verbally describe what was visible in the picture.

Here you can see how the motto of LIMU Academy comes into play: “Fun, Games & Learning German!”
